Taxi Saver Program Changes – September 1, 2023
We would like to inform you of some important changes to the Taxi Saver Program.
The upcoming changes to the Taxi Saver Program will be implemented on September 1, 2023.
We recognize that this program has been a valuable resource for many in our community, and we are committed to ensuring its continued success. Our goal is to ensure the program's sustainability while continuing to offer valuable transportation options to our residents.
After careful consideration and thorough review of the program, the decision to change the Taxi Saver Program has been made due to recent budget constraints, as well as an exciting opportunity offered through Mackenzie Community Services to provide a similar service to assist senior residents. We appreciate your understanding and support as we work to maintain a program that benefits our community as a whole.
Existing Program
The Taxi Saver Program allows seniors and people with disabilities greater convenience for spontaneous travel throughout Mackenzie. Individuals must be over the age of 65 or have a mental or physical disability to obtain a Handy Pass. Handy Pass Holders can purchase Taxi Saver vouchers from the District, with the District providing a 50% subsidy towards the cost of taxi rides.
Changes to the Program
New Eligibility Criteria
Residents are eligible for a Handy Pass if they meet all of the following criteria:
- Person primarily residing in Mackenzie, BC;
- Person between the age of 18 and 54;
- Person with a physical or mental disability; and
- Person who meets the current year’s Statistics Canada Low Income Cut-Off for communities with a population of less than 30,000.
Maximum Booklet Purchase
Handy Pass Holders may purchase up to 5 booklets per year. Coupons will expire at 11:59 pm on December 31st of each year.
How does this affect me?
Current Handy Pass Holders who have Taxi Saver Vouchers may continue using vouchers with no changes until December 31, 2023. Anyone who wishes to purchase additional vouchers must re-apply for a Handy Pass and must meet all new eligibility requirements.
Better at Home Program – Offered through Mackenzie Community Services
An exciting opportunity has been made available through the Better at Home Program, offered by Mackenzie Community Services. This program, funded through United Way, provides a number of services to residents over the age of 55, including a similar taxi saver or transportation subsidy program. The program is based on an income threshold and may provide up to a 100% subsidy to members in the community.
