GLOBAL ACCESSIBILITY AWARENESS DAY MAY 16, 2024

Accessibility-and-Inclusion-Advisory-Committee-1

Picture a world where everyone can easily use and enjoy the vast wonders of the digital universe, no matter their abilities. That’s the vision behind Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD), a special day that lights up the digital world with a clear message: access for all.

For over a billion people with disabilities, these challenges are part of daily life. GAAD aims to change that. It’s a call to arms for creating websites, apps, and tech tools that everyone can use.

What is Digital Accessibility?

Digital accessibility refers to the ability of people with disabilities/impairments to independently consume and/or interact with digital (e.g., web, mobile) applications and content. Take a look at WebAIM’s The WebAIM Million, for a current snapshot of trends and issues regarding web accessibility.

Celebrated every third Thursday in May, this day is a beacon of hope and action.  It's like a grand digital party, but the guest of honour is accessibility! By focusing on making the digital realm welcoming for all, we celebrate diversity and inclusion in the most innovative ways.

Turn Awareness to Action

More people are learning about access and inclusion thanks to Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD). Next, we can move from awareness to action with some simple steps no matter what industry or role you have. Everyone can play a part in the community as we are stronger together.

The following tips can help you jump start or help create your own ideas. So, pick one thing, dive in and act.

  1. Watch a Disability Awareness video. There are a lot to choose from both online and offline. To begin, here’s a 3-minute Disability Sensitivity video that has an audio described version, too.
  2. Read about updated disability language. This is a great Disability Style Guide from the National Center on Disability and Journalism. Or, check out the book Demystifying Disability by Emily Ladau.
  3. Incorporate your newfound knowledge into daily life to journey onward. One step today leads to another and another.
