Getting Bear-Aware for 2024

Bear Aware Disposal Practices
PN 03 27 24 Bear Aware Garbage Page 2

Spring has sprung in Mackenzie, and in bear country we can expect bears to be emerging soon. As bears emerge, they will be seeking out fresh grasses and sedges to feed on as well as winter-killed animals. Do not let garbage and other attractants such as compost, pet food and bird seed draw them into our community. Here is what you can do to prepare for bears emerging:

  • Please review the correct garbage disposal practices outlined in Bylaw No. 1487.
  • Attend the Wildlife Awareness Training session sponsored by Conuma Resources held for the public at the Mackenzie Secondary School Gym on May 4th at 12:00 pm. The session will last 1-2 hours. No registration or fees are required to attend.
  • Attend the Bear Safety for Caregivers of Young Children workshop. This event is hosted by Child Care Resource and Referral with Conservation Officer Hilary Desmarais at the Mackenzie Recreation Center's Sas Da’ghe Room from 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm on April 25th. There are limited seats, so click the link above to visit the event's webpage and enroll before April 24th.
  • Review steps you can take to prepare for bears, visit our Bear Awareness page.
  • For ideas on how to secure attractants visit WildsafeBC.
  • Report bear sightings in Mackenzie through the 24-hour hotline at 1-877-952-RAPP (7277).
  • Share this post to help remind your neighbours and friends that the bears are back! Together we can put an end to bear conflicts by securing all attractants. Help keep bears wild and our community safe.
