You’re 3.6× More Likely to Crash When Using Your Phone
Distracted driving continues to be one of the leading causes of serious crashes in British Columbia, and ICBC’s March 2026 campaign reminds all drivers of the risks.
Did you know? You’re 3.6 times more likely to crash if you’re using your phone, GPS, or any electronic device while driving. This split‑second distraction slows reaction time, reduces awareness, and increases the chances of missing critical information like changing traffic lights or nearby pedestrians.
Across B.C., distracted driving remains the second‑leading contributing factor in all police‑reported fatal crashes, surpassed only by speeding. Each year, it contributes to:
- 80 deaths and 4,833 injuries,
- 37% of all injury crashes, and
- 39% of distracted‑driving crashes occurring at intersections.
ICBC, local police, and the provincial government continue to work together through advertising, enforcement, and community outreach to combat this preventable issue.
Let’s all do our part #LeaveYourPhoneAlone and help everyone reach their destinations safely.
